Happiness Check
Three questions on a regular cadence that surface how someone actually feels about working here — before the resignation letter does.
Run it inside the 1:1, roughly quarterly per person — and any time someone seems flat. Asked regularly, the questions normalise honesty; asked once after a resignation, they're an autopsy.
The three questions
Out of ten — how happy are you working here right now?
The number matters less than the follow-up: what would make it one point higher?
How likely is it that you're still working here three years from now?
Listen without flinching. Punish the honesty once and you'll never hear it again.
Tell me your favourite things — and your least favourite things.
Favourites tell you what to protect. Least favourites tell you what to fix — or at least what to acknowledge.
When the score dips, check the currency before the amount: unhappiness is often a love-language mismatch — plenty of salary, starved of growth; plenty of autonomy, starved of proximity.
