Traffic-Light Days
A ten-second morning check — is today a green, amber or red day? — that matches the ambition of your work to the energy you actually woke up with.
When you wake up, before you touch the calendar, ask yourself which day it is. Some mornings you're sharp and expansive; some mornings you're flat and can barely face the inbox. Most founders ignore the difference and demand the same peak output every day — then wonder why the strategy deck they forced out on a red morning has to be rewritten anyway. This is the daily companion to the Energy Audit: the audit colours the last two weeks after the fact; this colours today, in advance.
| Today is a… | Energy | So do… |
|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Green day | Sharp, expansive | Your most ambitious work — the strategy, the hard hire, the creative leap. |
| 🟠 Amber day | Steady, unremarkable | Solid, useful work — but don't force brilliance. |
| 🔴 Red day | Flat, depleted | Go easy on yourself. Easy work: expenses, booking flights, copying information from A to B. |
How to run it
Call the colour first thing
Before the calendar, before the inbox. It's a gut read on the battery you woke up with, not a plan — ten seconds, most mornings you already know.
Match the work to the colour
Move your most ambitious work onto green mornings and let red mornings clear the admin backlog. The work still gets done; it just gets done on the right day.
“Strategy deck slips from a red Tuesday to a green Thursday; the red Tuesday knocks out expenses and travel booking that were clogging the list anyway.”
Share your light with your cofounder
Ben runs this in his daily habit stack — "share with my cofounder my traffic light for today". It sets expectations without a meeting: a red light says don't bring me the big decision today.
The point isn't to have more green days — it's to stop spending green-day expectations on a red-day battery. Naming a red day is permission, not failure: a red day spent on expenses is a win; a red day spent trying to write the strategy is two days lost.
